Almost 2000 years ago, Jesus stood in our place and took the full wrath of God for our sins. The just for the unjust, to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). This was a demonstration of God's love (Romans 5:8). He did this because it is the only way we could be forgiven and reconciled to God. We have all sinned and walk in rebellion. God is Holy and we justly deserve God's wrath, and none of us are innocent. There has only been one innocent life and he volunteered to stand in our place and take our punishment, God's wrath for sins. We often cannot comprehend how horrible sin is. So horrible, that Jesus would cloth himself in human flesh in order to stand in our place. Jesus is not some creature created for this purpose. He is the Creator, the second person of the Trinity! He is Almighty God!

Can you fathom the amount of love it would take to accomplish this? When we say that Jesus drank the cup (John 18:11), we are not referring to the physical suffering Jesus experienced on the cross. Although these were horrible, the cup refers to the "cup of God's wrath." We see this in Jeremiah 25 and 51, and Revelation 14. Jesus drank the cup of God's wrath for sin! The Father laid upon Jesus the weight of all our sins. The Father pierced and crushed the Son, so that we could be healed and reconciled! What love!

What is also amazing is that this was God's plan from the beginning (Genesis 3:15) and was prophesied 700 years before Jesus came to Earth!

Genesis 3:15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

Isaiah 53
4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
