#shorts Liz Truss’s resignation after just 45 days in office has made her the shortest serving Prime Minister ever in the history of the United Kingdom and her brief stay at 10 Downing Street and sharp exit will go down as one of the most turbulent times in British political history. Who held the dubious honour of shortest serving PM before her though? The answer is George Canning, who died in office in 1827 just four months after taking over from the Earl of Liverpool. Canning’s successor, The Viscount Goderich, holds the bronze medal for shortest ever premiership, coming in at 144 days. The year of 1827 therefore has something in common with 2022; they can both be called the year of three Prime Ministers.
