(24 Nov 2014) Nuclear negotiators have failed to meet a Monday deadline for a deal that would ease international concerns about Iran's nuclear program and are poised to extend the negotiations for a comprehensive agreement until July 2015, diplomats said.
Under the terms of limited agreements reached after a frenetic six days of talks in Vienna, a political accord is to be completed by March 1, with final details contained in annexes to be sealed by July 1, the diplomats said.
Speaking outside the Palais Coburg hotel in Vienna, where the talks were held, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, however, that progress was made and "new ideas" emerged from the meetings.
"We made progress, there have also been new ideas brought to the table which may be able to bridge the remaining gaps," he said.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said his country remained committed to finding a deal that guaranteed security and peace, also acknowledging that "new ideas have been put forward in the past few days."
Iran, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany had set a deadline of midnight on Monday to come to a final agreement on a mechanism whereby Iran's pathways to develop a nuclear weapon would be closed in return for relief from international sanctions.
