Spokesperson for the European External Action Service Maja Kocijancic said that there was concern about President Rohani’s announcement today (5 November) on Iran’s moving away from commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or so-called Iran Nuclear Deal. The European Union urges Iran to reverse all activities that are inconsistent with its commitments under the JCPOA and to refrain from any further measures that would undermine the preservation and full implementation of the nuclear deal.
The spokesperson reiterated the EU's support for the International Atomic Energy Agency which is the only body that is responsible for monitoring and verifying Iran's nuclear commitments. The EU will base its assessment on Iran's activities on the report reports by the IAEA and recalled that the Iran nuclear deal, which was unanimously endorsed by the UN Security Council is a key element of global nuclear non-proliferation architecture.
The European Union remains committed to implementing the JCPOA even after the US withdrawal and the imposition of US sanctions. However, the spokesperson made it clear that commitments to the nuclear deal depends on full compliance by Iran.
It was acknowledged by the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini recently that it is becoming increasingly difficult to preserve the JCPOA. Kocijancic pointed out that the EU had taken steps to help preserve the agreement, including the adoption of a revised blocking statute and the attempt to create a special purpose vehicle by the three member states.
