Years ago I frequently purchased a blank reel of recording tape known as Ampex 456. This was a very reliable recording tape that always gave excellent results. Back in the 90s, I was a very big fan of reel to reel tape recorders. I owned several. If and when I could get my hands on Ampex 456 tape, I was always happy.
I recall back at that time there were no stores in my hometown that sold this tape. And this was before online shopping. The only place where I could find this tape was located in Moncton, a city that is about a 90 minute drive from my city. So, every time I was in Moncton, I would always pick up a 7 inch reel of Ampex 456. At that time, each reel cost approximately $20.
Of course Ampex no longer exists, but for many decades they were regarded as the kings of blank recordable tape. Many famous studios used Ampex tapes. And many classic rock and pop songs were recorded on Ampex.
My collection of reel to reel recorders has shrunk over the years. Now I just own a couple. Much of this is due to space limitations. I live in a small apartment, and do not have a lot of room for dozens of reel to reel machines. I wish I did!
Do you still use reel to reel? Do you have experience with Ampex 456? What do you think of it? Have you recently bought any on the second hand market? Leave a comment!
