When you register to vote, you are enrolled in the electoral register and you can vote in elections.
You get the option to participate in some elections depending on your circumstances and if you are from one of the commonwealth nations.
The major importance of registering to vote apart from the eligibility to vote and help decide who governs your local area or the country at large is that it improves your credit file and shows your stability to credit companies and potential lenders.
Who can register?
You must be aged 16 or over (or 14 or over in Scotland and Wales).
You must also be one of the following:
a British citizen
an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
a citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
