Officially referred to as the Republic of Rwanda, Rwanda is a land lock country located in the Central-Eastern part of Africa a few degrees south of the equator.
It is one of the smallest countries in Main Land Africa with a surface area of about 26.338 km2. It is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, Uganda to the North, Burundi to the South and Tanzania to the South East.
Rwanda gained its independence from Belgium in 1962 and currently has a population of about 12.5 million people making it the 28th most populated country in Africa.
Some of the languages widely spoken in Rwanda are English, Kinyarwanda, Swahili and French. The current president of Rwanda is paul Kagame a position he has been occupying since April 2000

Despite haven’t suffered a major crisis in the 90s, Rwanda is still one of the most Beautiful and exciting countries to visit in Africa and with that said, here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Rwanda.
1. Rwanda was the first Country in Africa to ban thye production and importation of Non Bio degradable bags.
As part of the campaign by the world Health organization to reduced air pollution and destruction of the Ecosystem caused mainly by plastic bags, several nations were called upon to take stringent measures with regards to the production and usage of plastic bags in their countries.
In 2002 Rwanda was the first country in African and second in the world after Bangladesh to ban the production and importation of plastic bag. Rwanda has zero tolerance towards Plastic bags and Traffickers caught carrying Illegal plastic bags in Rwanda are liable to be fined, jailed for up to six months or forced to make public confessions. Other African nations that have banned the production and importation of plastic bags include Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya and Cameroon just to mention a few.
2. Rwanda is the 2nd most densely populated Country in Africa.
As we earlier Mentioned, Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in main land Africa with a surface area of about 26.338 km2 and With a population of about 12.5 million inhabitants, Rwanda has a population Density of 512 people/KM2 making Rwanda the second most densely Populated Country in Africa after the Island Country of Mauritius and the 24th in the world. With the recent influx of immigrates in Rwanda, the country might surpass Mauritius to become the most densely populated country in the years ahead.
3. Rwanda has the World’s Record of the Highest Representation of women in Parliament
Rwanda has a parliamentary system of Government. The parliament in Rwanda comprises of two bodies, The senate with 26 senators and the Chambers of Deputies with 80 Members of Parliament.
Out of the 106 Members of Parliament in Rwanda, 60 are women while 46 are men making Rwanda the first country in the world with a large percentage of women being represented in Parliament with 64 percent.
Other countries with high percentage of women in their parliament include Bolivia and Cuba with more than 50%.
There are a lot of speculations that the 1994 incident cause the vast disparity between male and female in Rwanda since a vast majority of those who lost their lives were males which is why a vast Majority of the population in Rwanda comprises of females.….Well that’s debatable.
4. Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda is the Cleanest city in Africa
Rwanda is a very beautiful countries and part of what makes the country an exciting country to visit is how clean and safe the country is. Cleanliness is of utmost importance to the government of Rwanda that’s why everyone including the President of the country and top Government Officials participates in “umuganda” a community cleanup campaign held on the last Saturday of every month. The cleanup campaign is not adddf volunteer project, its an obligation and is closely monitored by the forces of law and order. According to Forbes Magazine, Kigali the capital city of Rwanda is the cleanest city in Africa a position it has been occupying for a couple of years now, what do you expect of a where the president of the country partakes in cleaning the streets.
