This is such a common statement I hear when other songwriters come up to me at conferences...
They'll say things like this:
"I'm not a great lyricist..." or "I'm doubting my skill."
"When I get inspiration, the lyrics and some kind of melody is there but I don't have the musical theory to move forward."
"I have been giving serious thought to taking guitar lessons. I feel so incredibly limited and dependent on others."
"My biggest obstacle is not having much skill instrumentally. Lyrics and melodies come fairly easily to me....with some rework and occasional input from friends....but I really need a musician to work with."
And always, here is my response to them...
1) Your songwriting depends on God, not on you. He is the Creator. All you have to do is listen.
2) You should always be looking to sharpen your skills. Invest in yourself as a writer!
3) Have you taken the songwriter personality test? Maybe you need a co-writer!!
