In this informative video, we provide an in-depth look into the process of a breeding eye exam through the eyes of our expert veterinarian, Dr. Vanessa Kuonen Cavens, a Board-certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist. The examination begins with an assessment of your pet’s eyelids, cornea, and lens, aiming to identify any inherited eye problems that might impact their vision or be passed on to their puppies.
But the examination doesn’t end there. The video takes you on a journey to witness the careful inspection of a litter of Australian Shepherd puppies aged between six to eight weeks. An exam helps detect inherited eye diseases early on, a critical step in preventing potential vision impairments in these young pups. Identifying these conditions at an early stage not only safeguards the puppies' eyesight but also plays a pivotal role in responsible breeding practices.
Once the exams are completed and normalcy is ensured, the forms are submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). OFA then certifies the results, providing breeders with tangible proof of their dogs' ocular health. These certifications, valid for one year, provide peace of mind to breeders and contribute significantly to the overall well-being of the canine community.
