A stock ECM is programmed to suite the manufacturer. It keeps the car in line with the warranty, emissions, fuel economy, and everything that the car was designed to do when it was first purchased. However, cars are capable of much more than was the stock ECM allows.
Aftermarket ECM's are something that you purchase to help your car deliver even better results than the stock ECM would. Depending on the kind of aftermarket ECM you purchase you would be able to push your car and improve performance, speed or even fuel efficiency to a degree that a stock ECM simply wouldn't allow.
All in all, the ECM is extremely important for your cars health and performance and deciding wether or not you should buy another stock ECM or go with an aftermarket ECM can be a difficult decision.
