Hello everyone. My name is Rebekah Antoine. I am a wife, a mother of two beautiful girls, and a birth doula. I provide support to pregnant women and their families.
Some of you may not know but August is designated as the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and the first week is actually World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).
WBW started in 1992 to commemorate the 1990 Innocenti Declaration which world leaders developed to promote breastfeeding globally. Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) which are global goals that serve as a call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and promote health and wellness for all.
If you are breastfeeding or considering to breastfeed, you are NOT alone. Breastfeeding is NOT JUST about feeding a baby. It involves everyone around that breastfeeding family. It’s about healthcare, women work, economy, education, human rights and community support.
In Miami-Dade County, at the Consortium for A Healthier Miami-Dade County, the Healthy Baby Taskforce wants to help support our residents’ health and wellness and provide encouragement and support to new parents. So throughout this week, we will be sharing some local resources where you can find community support for your breastfeeding journey. Stay tuned!
