A grand jury is a body of people, citizens, who are selected to return indictments against people who have been accused of crimes. It’s a system that’s in place so that we, as citizens, cannot be prosecuted by the government unless the citizens on the grand jury agree that there’s evidence to bring a charge.
The federal grand jury is not unlike the state grand jury, except the federal grand jury often is used in lengthy investigations. Sometimes people are subpoenaed before the federal grand jury to testify, and in the federal grand jury, the United States Attorney will go in and present evidence to the people on the grand jury, asking them to charge somebody with a crime. The charging document is called an indictment. So, if somebody’s been charged with a federal crime, you’ll hear that they’ve been indicted by the federal grand jury.
