UL 94 V-0 is a fire standard used to determine the flammability of a specified material and its associated burn time. For a vertical burn test, a total of 5 specimens with a length of 125 mm (5 in) and a width of 13 mm (0.5 in) are tested. Each specimen is mounted 10 mm (approx. 3/8 in) vertically above a Bunsen burner tube. For pultruded specimens, the specimen should be mounted so that the roving is vertical. A 20 mm (approx. 3/4 in) high blue flame is applied to the lower edge of the specimen for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, the flame is removed from under the specimen and the time it takes for the specimen to self-extinguish is recorded. Immediately after the specimen self-extinguishes, the flame is reapplied for another 10 seconds. The flame is then removed again and the time it takes for the specimen to self-extinguish a second time is recorded. To pass the UL 94 V-0 test, the specimens must meet the following criteria:
• Flaming combustion cannot exceed 10 seconds after either application of the controlled flame.
• Total flaming combustion time for all 5 specimens cannot exceed 50 seconds.
• The specimens cannot burn with flaming or glowing combustion up to the mounting clamp.
• The specimens cannot exhibit glowing combustion for more than 30 seconds after the removal of the second flame.
• The specimens cannot drip flaming particles.
