Is tonewood real? Is electric guitar tonewood a myth? In this video we investigate that. This guitar is The Tonemaster 3000, or the TM3k - it is a Sapele (mahogany) bodied Telecaster with a maple neck. It has a humbucker installed by the bridge and another installed behind the bridge - One to show you the sound including the strings (and if i'm being honest, so I can tune it), and the other to show you how much sound comes from the guitar excluding the strings, i.e. the sound of the tonewood.
This experiment shows that although the amount of tone from the tone wood is very small, it is not entirely insignificant. In summary, should you buy a guitar based on the "Tonewood"? No. Should you buy a guitar based on how the wood looks? yes?
Hopefully the tone wood debate can finally be laid to rest...
