Ty Cobb swing. Cobb's swing was adapted to play in the "dead ball era". The ball was "dead" from design and overuse. Pitchers could legally scuff the ball, and apply foreign substances to the ball. The ballparks were also larger. The result was a game focused on singles, bunting, and stolen bases.
The combination of factors made it almost impossible to hit balls "out of the park'. League leaders for home runs sometimes hit as few as 12 homers during a season.
