In November 2021, NNSA built the first fully assembled B61-12 bomb, a major achievement in the Life Extension Project (LEP) for this weapon. The LEP refurbishes, reuses, or replaces all the bomb's components, extending its life by at least 20 years without providing any new military capabilities. When the project is complete, the B61-12 will replace the B61-3, B61-4, and B61-7 in the current nuclear stockpile.
