Counters in Japanese
Counters are measure words used to count things, events etc. and they appear with a numeric prefix. There are plenty of counters used in Japanese and for few categories multiple counters are in use. For example
(Small) Animals 匹 ひき
(Large) Animals 頭 とう
Cars 台 だい
Boats 艘 そう
Ships 隻 せき
Aircraft 機 き
Some of the more common counters may substitute for less common ones. For example, 匹 (ひき) is often used for all animals, regardless of size.
This video explains how to count particular order or rank in Japanese.
