Remember that once you let your domain name expire, you can't control the content that appears on that domain name. Lets say you posted your domain name on a forum, Quora or Facebook. Next to your post is your face with the URL pointing to this domain name. 3 years later you forget about all that, and you let your domain name expire. But people still might see this URL, click on it, expect your content and might arrive to what we call a bad website. This can be horrible for your company brand or your personal brand because the content is no longer controlled by you and can be anything from a porn site, viagra pills, fake watches or anything illegal that can't utilize normal ways of acquiring website traffic like search engine optimization, search engine marketing, Google AdWrods, Facebook ads, etc.
