In English, words or phrases can have two meanings when they are being used.
First, literal and Second Figurative.
Literal means whatever which is being said is meant as per the words being used. In simple words, we go by the dictionary meaning of the words
While Figurative means 'drawing the mental picture' of whatever is being said as it will help convey an idea faster and more vividly than literal language.
Lets understand this concept with an example.
Bolt ran very fast in the race. We get to know that 'Bolt' ran really fast. Here,as we go by the exact words, we used literal meaning
to understand the thing.
Now, lets look into another example.
Bolt ran like a Cheetah in the race.
Here, In this sentence what happens, your mind starts having an imaginary picture of Cheetah and Bolt running
and you start comparing Bolt with 'Cheetah'. So, Here, what happen's. your mind starts undertsanding more. As our mind is made such that it
recognizes pictures easily. In regards to this, There is a saying also that 'A picture is worth 1000 words'
Now, you might be having confusion on when we should use Literal Language and when to use Figurative Language.
Use Literal Language, whenever you are writting highly technical stuff like any scientific expirement.
As, you want the readers to understand the stuff exactly what is written.
And Use Figurative Language, when you want to make their work more interesting or more dramatic.
Like a story, poem or a play.
I hope you are now clear when to use one language over the other.
