Ep. 74: FREE Things to do in Florida - Florida has some pretty incredible wildlife and we're excited to take you with us this week to get up close and personal with some of our favorites! Looking for FREE things to do in Florida? This is a must see!
Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida ([ Ссылка ]) is a non-profit animal hospital and educational center that rescues sick, injured, and orphaned native Florida wildlife. They care for thousands of animals and an average of 250 species a year! Animals that can’t be released back into the wild find a permanent home at the sanctuary. When you visit the animals, you can also explore nature trails that lead through some of their natural habitat - pine flat woods, oak hammocks, and cypress wetlands. The sanctuary is a great place to learn about Florida's wildlife and natural environments!
We’re excited to share this location with you as it’s a place that’s near and dear to our hearts. We visit often when we’re home, and we have several animals that have become friends over the years! A few of our favorites:
Stu the Black Bellied Whistling Duck: I think Stu is one of the sweetest animals I have ever met! He is always quite talkative when we visit. He has been at the sanctuary for over 5 years. He was released initially to a private farm with some other ducks but kept seeking human interaction in the community so he was returned to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary where it was decided he would be safer and fare better.
Romeo the Northern Crested Caracara: Considered a threatened species in the state of Florida, there are only an estimated 400 Crested Caracaras left in the state primarily due to habitat loss. These birds are so unique and beautiful! We love visiting Romeo as he is very inquisitive and enjoys when we bring him sticks!
River Otters: The playful animals are some of our very favorites to observe! North American river otters were hunted and trapped extensively for their fur in the 19th and 20th centuries and are still hunted in some places. They were extirpated from portions of their range, but conservation and reintroduction efforts are helping populations to recover. However, habitat destruction and water pollution still put these animals at great risk, especially because they are so specialized. (Source: National Wildlife Federation)
