Using Carbon Felt Fiber Welding Blanket Made in the USA by Waylander Welding, we have cut-to-fit to match the specifications of our offset charcoal smoker cook chamber and firebox. The goal is to increase cook times while using less fuel. Insulation helps to reduce interior heat from escaping and being affected by the outside elements similar to how your home insulation works.
Cutting the carbon felt was easy and only required basic scissors to complete the task. We easily adhered the carbon felt to the smoker with neodymium magnets.
Additionally, we weigh out other options including fiberglass welding blankets and manufacturer made custom bbq smoker jackets.
We ultimately went with the Carbon Felt by Waylander due to the fact that it has a higher heat tolerance, softer to the touch as to not irritate skin like fiberglass and it is well made.
After insulating we observed a striking % increase in efficiency.
We tested with the felt and without the felt to measure the differences.
The smoker was kept at 250f in 100f+ ambient temperature with little wind in both tests using 16lbs of kingsford blue original charcoal briquettes with the minion method.
This mod will work for any type of smoker. Drum smokers, charcoal smokers, bullet smokers, offset smokers, pellet smokers, wood smokers, reverse flow smokers, etc. If you are using a pellet smoker it is not necessary to insulate the hopper as pellets are fed to the center of the cook chamber and then combusted.
