Five of Our Favourite Wineries in the #BarossaValley

The Barossa Valley is Australia’s most famous wine region and Shiraz its signature wine. In the right hands, the Barossa really can produce a style of Shiraz that can’t be found anywhere else – big, bold, juicy, and kissed with that familiar warm Barossa texture… The Barossa also does complete magic with Grenache. Many Australians aren’t overly familiar with Grenache as a straight varietal, but for those who try a brilliant Langmeil or Arno Grenache, they’ll very quickly regret what they’ve been missing all this time. And these days, the Barossa is also producing some special stuff from lesser known varietals like Aglianico and many others.

When you visit the Barossa (as every true AUS wine enthusiast must), the following are five of our absolute favourite wineries. You’ll find epic Shiraz, Grenache, and so, so much more at these can’t miss stops.

Izway, in our opinion, is the coolest winery in the Barossa. We always feel so alive and inspired when we go there. The people are wonderful and engaging, and they pretty much define “craft winemaking”. We’re talking about very small productions of each wine. The nuances they pull out of these wines is breathtaking and something that cannot be achieved in mass production. Most wineries in Barossa produce a few Shirazes, sure, but none coax as much character out of each as Izway does with its range. And what they do with Aglianico … the stuff of dreams. A very cool winery indeed.

If Barossa means Shiraz, Langmeil means Barossa. Langmeil is the epicentre of what Barossa Shiraz is all about. Truly, if you want the quintessential all-Barossa Shiraz, Langmeil is our top recommendation for you. Their Orphan Bank Shiraz is as Barossa as Shiraz gets. Langmeil also produced one of the best Grenaches that we ever tasted. Do not leave here without trying a couple Grenaches as well. Oh, and did someone say Riesling? NOT to be missed.

Schild Estate is the Barossa’s best value for your money producer. Schild produces a wide range of wines, like their ethereal 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon or their perennially delicious sparkling Shiraz. And amazingly, moreso than almost any winery I can think of, everything they make is superb. It is very unusual to find a winery that can do more than one or two varietals really well. And yet we can easily think of four or five Schild wines we’d be pleased to drink right now 😊 Incredibly, most of these wines are $30 or less. Thank you, Schild.

Two Hands is something a little different in that they source their fruit from a few regions around South Australia, including, of course, Barossa, but also McLaren Vale, the Clare Valley, and Langhorne Creek. What that means for you is that when you stop here, in addition to tasting a few exceptional Barossa Shirazes, you can also try Shiraz from some of Australia’s most prestigious other wine regions, which will allow you to really understand what makes a Barossa Shiraz so special. In the end, though, all of Two Hands’ wines are exceptional.

And finally, Kalleske. All of Kalleske’s wines are produced organically and biodynamically. At first, that put us off because we assumed it was just another marketing gimmick, but Kalleske has really made us believers in what organic and biodynamic can bring to wine. Kalleske’s wines absolutely sing with life, exuberance, and joy. These juicy wines shine with fruit clarity, almost bursting out of the bottle. It’s as if they want you to discover exactly how much they have to offer.
