The UNESCO World Heritage site St Millan Suso and Yuso Monasteries, in La Rioja, northern Spain. These two monasteries, devoted to a hermit monk named St Millan who lived nearby, were founded in the 6th century. Suso, the upper monastery, is the older of the pair, while Yuso, the lower monastery, was built in the 11th century. Monastic communities have been active on the site since the time of St Millan (who died in 574), including orders of Benedictines, Augustines, and others. The site is also super important as the birthplace of both the Basque and Spanish languages - it's here that Spanish was written down for the first time. Quite an interesting slice of history, so let's take a closer look!
