As the season goes into late autumn, China is blowing wave
of chilly wind to clean up the outspoken journalists.
It is another round of even more cruel and rigid control
from the officials.
On the afternoon of November 1st, senior journalist
Chen Jieren revealed through an on line posting that his
managing editor position at the Jiangsu branch of People.com
was being terminated.
This termination was due to his criticism of the government and
he's thus considered to be on "the American side."
The mouthpiece of the communist party can not employ people
who do not "cooperate."
In the future, People's Daily News and its affiliated companies
will never hire him again.
Chen Jieren indicated that the direct cause of his dismissal
was due to the fact that he recently organized a series of
commentaries targeting organizations with
vested interests in People.com at Jiangsu.
The indirect cause was that People's Daily considered him
a "noncooperator" who should be disposed of.
Right after he published his dismissal message online,
his message was deleted and his website account went "under review."
He also received a warning call.
Huang Liangtian, the former editor of "Common People"
magazine was also fired as a "noncooperator."
Huang Liangtian: (recording 0:00-0:23) "China's Communist
Party simply does not deny its advocacy approach.
The so-called radio and media are the party's propaganda tools.
Being in the media industry, you must be its propaganda tool,
namely its voice.
You are neither the head nor the heart.
You can not have a conscience or your own independent thinking."
The day before Chen Jieren published his on-line message
(October 30), China's "Great Wall Monthly" editor Zhu Shunzhong revealed through an on-line message that he and some members
of his news team have decided to leave their positions.
Zhu Shunzhong's article entitled, "There is a force called madness,
and there is a force called toughness," revealed the suffering that
the outspoken journalists have to endure when insisting on
telling the truth.
Former associate professor of Peking University School of
Journalism Jiao Guobiao is an acquaintance of Zhu Shunzhong,
Jiao Guobiao: "When you have a manuscript,
you have to talk to your superior, to your subordinate, to this person, and to that person.
It's because he's the editor and he has to deal with all aspects,
whether a manuscript is acceptable, and the aftermath after it's accepted.
These are just part of it.
I can very well feel his pain.
It is very painful not being able to speak freely,
to express freely, and to report freely. This is real suffering."
In addition, the originally popular host of Phoenix TV's
Century Forum program, Wang Luxiang, was suddenly replaced on October 8th.
Since then, there is no news about his whereabouts.
Wang Luxiang's being laid off was believed to be due to his
strong criticism of the CCP forcing the "harmonious society"
that has caused massive talented Chinese to be suffocated under
the corrupt one-party dictatorship.
Phoenix TV is nominally a foreign media,
and the "Great Wall Monthly" is a magazine also registered in Hong Kong, and published in mainland.
The editor and host were likewise disposed of by the Chinese
communist officials due to their opinions.
Huang Liangtian believes the destruction to the society
and the culture stems from the official mouthpiece.
Huang Liangtian: "The May Fourth Movement
spirit we are advocating is now gone. It is now a servile advocate, a tool.
In this case, it is really very naïve to hope for clean politics
Within a time frame, or a day or two.
It is not only useless for the journalists, even people like
Mr. Wen Jiabao, whose appeal will be useless. It is very weak. "
The dismissal news of Chen Jieren and Zhu Shunzhong have
triggered concern on-line.
In his latest blog, Zhu Shunzhong stated,"if you don't allow us
to speak of the truth, please at least tell your boss that
this country needs a group of people
with lofty ideals and a view of the world."
This passage was forwarded many times.
