Pretend for a moment that you wake up one morning to discover the Internet has disappeared. What would the world be like without the Internet?
44 years ago, a small team of scientists set up a computer terminal at one of its picnic tables and conducted an extraordinary experiment. They proved that a strange idea called the Internet could work. They revolutionized the Information Age.
The Internet is so vast and formless that it’s hard to imagine it being invented. It’s everywhere, but we only see it in glimpses. It makes itself knowable to us by taking possession of the pixels on our screens to manifest sites, apps, and email, but its essence is always elsewhere. So how big is the Internet? One measure is the amount of information that courses through it: about five exabytes a day. That’s equivalent to 40,000 two-hour standard definition movies per second!
So what would the world be like without the Internet? Given the amount of time we spend on our smartphones, tablets, and computers, an unconnected world would be completely boring to many of us.
Ipsos surveyed more than 18,000 people across 23 countries and two-thirds said they couldn’t imagine life without the Internet. 82% of Indians surveyed said they couldn’t imagine an offline life. India has the second-highest number of internet users worldwide by headcount.
Some of the consequences resulting from an Internet-less world would be felt more by certain generations. For instance, an 85-year-old grandparent might still be more comfortable using an old-fashioned landline to call their grandchild rather than text them.
The Internet is still not the be-all and end-all of services available to mankind, but its disappearance would instantly change our world as we know it. Still, it never hurts to burn a few dozen of your favorite YouTube videos onto a compact disc just in case.
