STORYLINE:
Demonstrators and police clashed in Chile's capital on Monday after an Indigenous march turned violent.
The march passed peacefully through Santiago until some protesters entered a standoff with police.
They threw stones at the officers who responded by deploying a water cannon.
The rally marked a day known as the "Encounter of the Two Worlds".
The annual event marks the taking of Indigenous lands by the Chilean state in the 19th century.
The date of the march coincided with Columbus Day, which marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, on 12 October 1492.
It is not the first time the march turned violent.
In 2021, a law student died after being hit by a firework launched by a protester during a confrontation with police.
Some of those taking part on Monday waved Palestinian flags and banners in support of the people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
