Hi Everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today we are covering vaccine reactions in the dog. Dog vaccine reactions are not common, but they do happen.
Most dog vaccine reactions are mild. This may include allergic reaction symptoms like hives, facial swelling around the nose or muzzle and eyes. Some dogs can even have stomach upset that leads to vomiting and drooling.
Like people, a dog may be a little tired or mild pain at injection site, and this is considered normal with any vaccine.
I more serious cases a vaccine reaction may cause an anaphylactic reaction that leads to life threatening symptoms like hypotension, hypothermia, bradycardia and other changes consistent with an anaphylactic reaction.
For mild vaccine reactions a veterinarian will usually give an antihistamine like Benadryl and a steroid injection. Some vets will send home oral medications too.
For more serious vaccine reactions, the veterinarian will place an IV catheter, give fluids, and provide supportive care for all symptoms and abnormal findings found on physical exam. The vet will of course give an antihistamine and steroid in all cases, because the reaction is an allergic response to the vaccine.
