This is one of the longest unsolved murders in South Korea’s modern History. Lee Chun-Jae is a South Korean serial Killer known to be responsible for the Hwaseong serial murders. Lee murdered 15 women and girls between 1986 and 1994 and sexually assaulted countless others in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, and the surrounding area. After 30 years, the serial killings are still among the most notorious in modern South Korean History. The film Memories of Murder, released in 2003, is based on their stories. Lee was given a life sentence with the prospect of parole after 20 years for the 1994 murder of his sister-in-law, but he was never tried for the other murders, despite DNA evidence and a confession he made in 2019.
