The Dangoor Lecture 2023: Towards health creation - we can't afford the NHS anymore by Dr Axel Heitmueller. Recorded on Wednesday 19 April 2023 as part of the Royal Society of Medicine's public engagement programme.
Dr Axel Heitmueller, Managing Director, Imperial College Health Partners, discusses the critical challenges faced by the NHS and what he believes needs to change to secure its future.
The National Health Service (NHS) is simultaneously suffering from two illnesses: One acute and one chronic. In the short term, a unique combination of acute pressures and the continuing impacts of Covid-19 have culminated in a collapse in urgent care and an increasingly insurmountable elective backlog. Longer-term challenges and systemic issues have left the UK less resilient to such crises and pose a greater threat to the future of our health and social care system. The debate around moving the NHS towards a preventative model has been going on for almost as long as the health service has existed. This has now become urgent, and we can’t afford to just invest in the NHS anymore. What is the path of transition?
