I've always wanted to do some turning on a lathe. So a couple of weeks back I scoured OfferUp and found a small lathe used and figured it would be great to turn a handle for my brass woodworking mallet from DFM Tool Works. It's my first time solo on the lathe, unsupervised, whatever you want to call it. I had some ambrosia maple that was gifted to me from a friend, and using just what came with the original used lathe at the time, I managed to get a functional handle going for my mallet. This isn't a perfect exercise in wood turning by any stretch of the definition. Rather, this highlights my learning experience, using traditional wood turning tools to make something fast and beautiful. My instant impression on wood turning is that this is an awesome way to score a quick win in the shop or have some fast success when you're working on a more robust build. I'm not looking to turn this into a full blown turning channel, but if you'd like to see me incorporate some more turned items into my repertoire or fit into a larger build, let me know in the comments below.
