The empty can test is commonly performed to detect shoulder impingement. The empty can position involves elevating the arm to 90 degrees of elevation with internal rotation.
Jobe first described this test to check for supraspinatus strength, but it quickly became a test for rotator cuff pathology due to how provocative it could be.
Personally, I don’t often use this test or at least perform it with caution as it is very provocative. You are placing the rotator cuff in a very disadvantageous position.
