Check out the grab-handles installed in the VW Polo (sold in India). They do not have dampers installed so the handle retracts back instantly causing it to hit the headliner and making the ‘thud’ noise.

You can remove the grab handles and install a small damper inside which will make the handle retract gradually upon pulling. Requires a bit of cutting and grinding.
