It's time to stock up the lumber rack! But how many 2x4s can we get by milling just one log? We did the math, but the results will be based on how careful we are...

If you're interested in some of the geekier stuff:
Logs are valued based on the narrow end, or the 'scale' end. You measure up/down, then left-right and average the numbers. Our log is 16inches.
The you measure the length, and either look up the number in scale book, or do the math: Using the 'Doyle' scale approximates the ol' "Pi R Squared" but subtracts 4 inches for milling waste.
It goes like this: ((Diameter - 4)/4)^2 x Length
Don't blame me. This is just how sawmills do it.
We ended up with a 16"x8' log which is 72 board-feet

A board-foot is a 12"x12"x1" board

A 2x4 is really 1.5x3.5 inches and 8 feet long
A 2x4 is 3.5 board feet (1.5" x 3.5" x 8'/12")
