The Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate (YPL) held its fourth annual event at Central Library this past week. Sophie Kim, a 17-year-old poet, playwright, filmmaker and LBGTQ activist at Harvard-Westlake High School in Studio City was crowned the newest L.A. Youth Poet Laureate. She was selected from 107 applicants, a record number nationally. In her piece, she explored the intersections of gender identity before a large and engaged crowd who snapped their fingers in a beatnik fashion.
