Hi I’m max, an engineer at tameson, and today we’re going to talk about pneumatic rotary actuators.
We are going to talk about the operating principle, the different types of pneumatic rotary actuators, and how to select the right one for your application.
Pneumatic actuators allow you to control ball or butterfly valves with compressed air rather than electricity or manually. They consist of one or more air chambers with a piston or a diaphragm. Depending on the design, the air pressure forces the piston or the diaphragm to move, creating rotary motion that can open or close a valve.
In general, this motion is created using a rack-and-pinion gear, other mechanisms are also possible but these are the most common. Here the rack is pushed by the compressed air, which creates linear motion. This motion then turns the pinion which drives the piston.
Pneumatic actuators can be single-acting or double-acting. A double-acting actuator has air on both sides of the piston. Higher air pressure on one side allows for the movement to open and close the valve. An advantage of double-acting actuators is that they generally have a slightly higher torque at the same amount of air pressure than single-acting actuators. The opening speed can also be tweaked in both directions by controlling the airflow.
A single-acting actuator returns to the beginning position by means of a spring. The air pressure must therefore not only operate the valve but also tighten the spring while opening. As a result, the torque of a single-acting actuator is somewhat smaller at the same size and air pressure, compared to a double-acting one.
You can choose between normal and normally closed actuators, depending on what the starting position of the spring is. These types of actuators are especially useful if, for example, in case of pressure or power loss, your valve has to go back to the unpowered position.
