This two-day GeoColor movie, taken from Japan’s Himawari-8 satellite, shows a massive Aleutian low moving into the Bering Sea on December 12-13, 2015.The storm had an estimated atmospheric pressure among the lowest on record for the northern Pacific. The lowest barometric pressure in the storm was estimated to be 924 millibars at 9 p.m. Alaska time on December 12 according to an analysis done by NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center. This ties a Bering Sea storm in November of 2014 with the same lowest estimated pressure. The Himawari-8 satellite carries an Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), which is very similar to the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). Imagery from Himawari-8’s AHI is being used to prepare users for the capabilities that will be available from the ABI.
