This is part of a series of conversations with musicians and collaborators who have enriched this project by bringing in their personal experience, music perspective, and cultural heritage into the recreation of the Sephardic music repertoire. After all, we believe that Sephardic music is a Jewish diaspora multicultural experience that continues to be alive through a diverse manifestation. A music genre in evolution which has managed to keep its unique essence while allowing its listeners to make beautiful and remarkable connections, and for many of us allowing us to discover our own cultural identity.
In 1492, when the Royal Decree was issued, the Jews and Muslims were forced to either convert to Catholicism or leave the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) or Spharad, its Hebrew name. Many of the Spanish Jews who concerted to Christianism to save their lives and their families became what is known as Crypto Jews. "Crypto" referring to their hidden identity and faith as they would continue to practice their Jewish faith in secret. Many of these Crypto Jews became part of the diaspora that would settle around the Caribbean islands with the hopes of being free to practice their Jewish faith.
With the arrival of Christopher Columbus to Puerto Rico, the island became home to one of the largest hosts of the Crypto Jews in the Caribbean. This is how many of us, Puerto Ricans and Caribbean's are what are known as 'Bene Annusim" or children of the 'forced ones". Our culture is permeated with a strong Sephardic (Iberian Jewish diaspora) heritage that which has been hidden from us for centuries, but which have formed are culture, way of thinking, and it is even very present in our music, gastronomy, and language.
