SuperTyphoon "Hagibis" in the Western Pacific Ocean underwent through one of the fastest rates of rapid intensification ever observed as it approached the Mariana Islands. Based on the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's (JTWC) operational best track, the system strengthened from a 55 knot tropical storm to a category 5 supertyphoon (≥140 knots) on the Saffir-Simpson scale in just 24 hours, from October 06 12UTC to October 07 12UTC. Hagibis maintained supertyphoon intensity for a few days and eventually struck central Japan as a weaker typhoon.
This satellite animation is a combination of images from Himawari-8's Rapid Scan Floater (2-3 minutes interval) and 10 Minute Floaters, showing the lifespan of SuperTyphoon Hagibis.
