The point of no return is a thing in Final Fantasy 8 - this is when you progress to a certain point on disk 3 making many of the previous locations and quests unavailable for the rest of the game. Don't be deceived by that fact that you can return to the world map on disk 4 because when you do so, many of the game's towns are forever locked away.

I am not sure why this is part of the game, I understand story wise there is time compression and all weird stuff, but the portals take us OUT of the dungeon area they could easily have taken us back to the old world correctly if Square wanted that.
