Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a carbon negative energy solution, capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing renewable energy. This makes it the only carbon removal technology that produces carbon negative energy.

To fight climate change the world needs to reduce its GreenHouse Gas emissions. There are sectors where this is much harder to achieve, such as aviation or heavy industry. To compensate for those sectors, a report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that the deployment of carbon dioxide removals is unavoidable.

BECCS delivers high-quality carbon removals at a reasonable price while also supporting energy security, but the current market needs to be reformed for its carbon removals to be appropriately valued. For this, the EU should set up a proper framework for BECCS that is reflected in the Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF) and in the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA).
