Former U-S President George Bush arrived in Nicaragua Saturday to show his support for embattled President Violeta Chamorro and mark the fifth anniversary of her electoral defeat of the Sandinistas.
Bush and his wife Barbara arrived Saturday for a one day visit to Nicaragua in the midst of an constitutional crisis between Chamorro's administration and Congress.
Life in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua was business as usual but President Violeta Chamorro could use a boost from former U-S President George Bush- the man whose support helped her to victory over the Sandinistas in 1990.
Bush and his wife were greeted upon their arrival at Managua airport by Chamorro's top aide and son-in-law Antonio Lacayo and Foreign Minister Ernesto Leal.
Bush met Chamorro at the Presidential Palace and will attend a ceremony tonight at the Plaza de la Republica, during which he will be awarded the Order of Jose Dolores Estrada.
Dolores Estrada was a Nicaraguan hero who fought against the invading American William Walker.
Chamorro is embroiled in a battle with Congress over the constitution her own presidential powers.
Nicaragua now officially has two constitutions. The new constitution - which Chamorro rejects - decreases presidential powers and give's more power to the country's Assembly.
Chamorro backs the existing constitution put in place by the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega. It says only the Nicaraguan president can impose reforms.
The President wants the Supreme court to rule on the issue which could see both herself and her son-in-law banned from running for the Presidency in 1996.
