Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his government during question period in the House of Commons in Ottawa on Wednesday, against an ongoing controversy regarding allegations of foreign election interference in the 2019 and 2022 Canadian elections.

"We have no information on federal candidates receiving money from China, that continues to be the case," Trudeau stated.

When pressed by the leader of the Official Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, about a Global News report that said Trudeau and his government were briefed on two high-level national security reports before and after the 2019 election suggesting they were warned that Chinese government officials were funneling money to Canadian political candidates, Trudeau continued to state that he was never briefed on the issue.

"I'm happy to clear up the confusion about what the committee reports -- yes, the committee reports to me and the government, but it also reports to parliamentarians and shares those reports. This is the way many committees function in our government and will continue to," the prime minister stated.

When asked by the leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, if the government would launch an independent inquiry into the allegations of Chinese interference, Trudeau said, "we have no information on federal candidates receiving money from China. But, at the same time Canadians are concerned about these various reports and allegations because there is ongoing attempts of interference by China and other countries which is why we are putting forward an independent expert to look at the entire landscape around foreign interference."
