This hike offers hikers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region, witness stunning ocean vistas, and potentially spot marine wildlife, including the majestic Southern Right whales. This hike is slackpacking, so you will just need to carry a small day pack with essential items such as first-aid kit, warm top, rain jacket dependent on season, hat, sunscreen, snacks, lunch, and water. Your bags will be transported to the hut along with your food which is stored in cooler boxes. The huts are fully stocked with all the necessary cutlery, crockery, pots & pans, stove, kettle, and fridge.

Distance: The Whale Trail is approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) long, spanning over five days of hiking.
Elevation: The trail consists of a mix of gradual ascents and descents, with a total elevation gain of around 1,200 meters (3,937 feet).
Hut Names: Along the route, hikers will encounter five well-equipped overnight huts: Potberg, Noetsie, Hamerkop, Vaalkrans, and Cupidoskraal.
Daily Itinerary:
Day 1: Potberg to Noetsie
Distance: Around 15 kilometers (9.3 miles)
Elevation: Moderate ascents and descents
The trail starts at Potberg, known for its diverse fynbos vegetation. Hikers can expect panoramic views of the coastline and may spot various bird species. Day 5: Cupidoskraal to De Hoop Main Camp
Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles)
Elevation: Gradual descent
