On November 19, 2013, Tomaquag Museum in Partnership with the Native Heritage Series at Brown and the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology hosted a Round Table Discussion with Indigenous educators, elders, and activists to discuss the themes of Louise Erdrich's, "Love Medicine". "An eclectic range of comic and tragic voices narrate this powerful book about the enduring power of love. Erdrich leads the reader through the interwoven lives of generations of Kashpaws and Lamartines in North Dakota." The Round Table Discussion of this modern classic was moderated by Dawn Dove, Narragansett elder, oral historian, author and educator. The panelists are Dr. Maria Lawrence, Ramapaugh, RI College professor of education; Lorén Spears, Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum, educator, artist, and author; Dr. Elizabeth Hoover, Mohawk, professor at Brown; Paulla Jennings, Niantic/Narragansett Elder and oral historian. These Indigenous representatives shared their perspectives on the themes of this book and how they connect to their communities. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
