It’s Only Love was recorded on 15 June 1965, to be included on the Beatles’ fifth album Help! released on 6 August 1965. John’s working title for the song was “That’s a Nice Hat”. John seemed to always think of this song as a throwaway, which is perhaps why he allowed George to have the largest creative influence on the song.
The tremolo guitar on this song has been the source of confusion for a lot of people. Walter Everett seemed to think it was the Rickenbacker 360/12 being played through a Leslie rotating speaker. If you listen to the end of the intro guitar parts, you can hear the tremolo stop abruptly, which means it can’t be a Leslie. (I actually did initially record this part through a Leslie effect on my amp, but the Bigsby sounds more accurate.)
Side note: the choppy rhythm part could have been played with capo on the fifth fret as well, but it really doesn’t make a difference.
Personnel on the Basic Track:
Paul on 1963 Hofner 500/1,
George on 1962 Gibson J-160E
John on 1964 Framus Hootenanny 5/024 acoustic 12-string
Ringo on 1964 Ludwig Super Classic Black Oyster Pearl
Personnel on overdubs:
George overdubs his 1963 Gretsch 6119 Tennessean on both parts during the riff (Descending melody and Bigsby tremolo part)
Probably Ringo on tambourine
The choppy rhythm guitar could be either John or George, either John’s 1964 Rickenbacker 325, 1961 Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster, or the Gretsch Tennessean again. I used the Squier Strat because the Filtertron pickups on my Gretsch 6120 are a little too hot to do a choppy rhythm.
Here's a pretty accurate bass tab:

Also when the tambourine was recorded, it played through the whole chorus and ending, but must have been faded out during mixing to match John's vocals more closely.
