(1 Mar 2020) Turkish troops shot down two Syrian warplanes after the Syrian military downed a Turkish drone on Sunday, a major escalation in the direct conflict between Syrian and Turkish forces.
Associated Press video showed militants of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, an Al Qaeda-linked Syrian rebel organization, getting ready for battle in Idlib province, the epicentre of the recent fighting.
Speaking from inside an armoured vehicle in Jabal Al Zawiya just south of Idlib city, one of the militants said he was confident of victory.
A Syrian government offensive in Idlib province has killed dozens of Turkish troops and led to a surge of nearly a million Syrian civilians towards Turkey.
Idlib is the last opposition-held stronghold in Syria and is dominated by al-Qaida linked fighters.
Turkey backs the Syrian rebels fighting in Idlib province and has sent thousands of troops into the area.
