It is hard to imagine that uninformed, unethical medical experimentation has taken place on people in recent U.S. history. Tragically, however, it has. In fact, it has happened well within the lifetimes of many people alive today. The Tuskegee Study of Untreated syphilis in the Negro Male, also known as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study or the Tuskegee Experiment, is just such an example.
600 African American men were recruited for the study and lied to about the purpose. All the while, they were denied actual medical treatment and tricked into undergoing painful procedures under the guise of being a free, special treatment.
It is scary to think that this medical experiment actually persisted for several years into the civil rights era; continuing for years after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Watch this short documentary on the Tuskegee Experiment to learn all the details of this true horror.
