Crested Caracaras are found from grasslands and deserts, to rangelands and scrubby areas, including in parts of South-Central Florida. This species is listed as Federally-designated Threatened by Florida's Endangered and Threatened Species Rule. They eat carrion as well as live prey including insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Dr. Joan Morrison and her former student James Dwyer wrote the chapter on Crested Caracaras for Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s The Birds of North America. A caracara banded by James fifteen years ago has recently been found and photographed by local photographer Paul Eisenbrown. After correspondence about the band, festival organizers invited Dr. Morrison to inform us on these fascinating raptors. East Seminole County is one of the closest locations to Orlando to see caracaras, the target of Friday's trip 7: Caracara Quest.
