Volkswagen recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating 50 years of Golf production at its Wolfsburg plant. The event, held in Hall 12, gathered company executives, political figures, and long-serving employees who have been part of the Golf's journey since the first model rolled off the production line in 1974. The ceremony highlighted the cultural and economic impact of the Golf, not just for Volkswagen but also for the State of Lower Saxony and Germany as a whole.
Stephan Weil, the Minister President of Lower Saxony, expressed his deep connection to the Golf, referring to it as more than just a car but a symbol of home and mobility. He praised the role the vehicle has played in shaping the state’s industrial strength. According to Weil, the Golf has provided stability and growth for Volkswagen and the region for decades, much like its predecessor, the iconic VW Beetle.
Volkswagen’s Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Schäfer, emphasized that the Golf has been a cornerstone of the brand for half a century. With over 37 million units sold in more than 70 countries, Schäfer noted that the car has shaped generations and earned a place in the hearts of millions. He also hinted at an exciting future for the Golf, as it transitions to an electric model while maintaining its signature qualities of high utility, design, and innovation.
The event paid special tribute to the Wolfsburg plant's workforce. Longtime employees shared their experiences, reflecting on the evolution of production techniques over the years. The ceremony ended with the unveiling of a unique Golf 8, decorated by trainees with images of staff, symbolizing the strong sense of teamwork and pride that Volkswagen employees continue to bring to the brand’s enduring success.
