1. Society / Gesselschaft (written laws, the state, civil society, nation, capitalism)
2. Community / Gemeinschaft (traditions, spoken mores, kinship and locality, reciprocity)

Like all the conceptual tools we use in Anthropology, the community-society distinction illuminates and obscures, for example in relation to 'urban villages'. Nevertheless, Anthropologists have found the "community" idea useful to work with, esp. in relation to the Internet.
